n today’s episode, I’m going to share the one thing you might be missing that could help you achieve greater success. Stay tuned.

Welcome to The Principal’s Handbook, your go-to resource for principals looking to revamp their leadership approach and prioritize self-care. I’m Barb Flowers, a certified life coach with eight years of experience as an elementary principal. Each week, we explore strategies to boost mental resilience, manage time effectively, and nurture your well-being. From tackling daily challenges to maintaining a healthy work-life balance—we’ll navigate the complexities of school leadership together.

Welcome back! Today, we’re talking about the one thing you’re likely overlooking when it comes to achieving success: celebration.

Often when we’re working toward a goal, we focus so much on reaching the finish line that we forget to acknowledge the progress we’re making along the way. Whether it’s a personal goal like weight loss or a professional goal like increasing student reading scores, we can become so fixated on the end result that we lose sight of the small wins.

Our brains are wired to gravitate toward the negative. While that helps protect us, it can also prevent us from recognizing all the good that’s happening. We get impatient. We want quick results. But progress takes time—and that’s why celebrating along the way is key to staying motivated and creating momentum.

Instead of waiting until the big win, what if we celebrated daily?

  • Celebrate the small steps forward.

  • Recognize staff for their growth and effort.

  • Help teachers and students see their wins.

Celebration boosts morale, reinforces your purpose, and keeps your momentum going. It’s not fluff—it’s fuel for long-term success.

How to Celebrate:

  • Personally: Use gratitude journaling, the 3-3-3 method (3 gratitudes, 3 wins today, 3 wins tomorrow), and my “1.0 Self vs. 2.0 Self” practice to track and honor your growth.

  • With Staff: Share wins at staff meetings, recognize people in weekly bulletins, provide food and appreciation notes, or plan simple after-school outings.

Celebration is powerful—it’s motivating, confidence-building, and positive-culture-creating.
