Welcome back! Today we’re talking about how to protect your mental energy throughout the day.

As principals, we face constant interruptions—some truly urgent, others made to feel urgent by the people bringing them to us. When staff or students come to you with a sense of panic or frustration, their energy can easily transfer to you. It’s up to you to decide how to handle those situations—but absorbing everyone else’s urgency is exhausting.

We’re making decisions constantly, often at a rapid pace. That takes mental energy, not just physical. By the end of the day, I’m not usually physically tired—I’m mentally drained. And when I go home, I have very little left to give to my family. That’s why it’s so important to learn how to safeguard your mental energy during the school day.

Even on days when I don’t move around much—just sitting in meetings or handling one issue after another—I can feel completely wiped out. So today, I’m sharing three strategies for protecting your energy and caring for your mind throughout your day as a principal.

🧠 Why This Matters

Protecting your mental energy:

  • Helps you stay focused and productive

  • Reduces stress and emotional reactivity

  • Prevents burnout, illness, and disengagement

  • Increases your ability to support teachers, students, and families

✅ 3 Mental Energy Protection Strategies

Strategy 1: Implement Regular Breaks
Don’t try to power through your entire day without rest. Taking a 10-minute break after every 50 minutes of work can actually boost your productivity. Whether it’s after a difficult conversation, a string of discipline issues, or a long meeting—step away to reset your focus.

Try these quick break ideas:

  • Shut your office door for five minutes of silence

  • Take a quiet walk around the building

  • Sit in the staff lounge and breathe
Even short breaks help you avoid decision fatigue and mental burnout.

Strategy 2: Use Mindfulness & Meditation Techniques
Mindfulness doesn’t have to mean 30 minutes of meditation. A minute or two of focused breathing can do wonders. You can use these quick tools to reset between tasks or after handling something stressful.

Simple breathing strategy:

  • Inhale for 4 seconds

  • Exhale for 8 seconds
Longer exhales activate your parasympathetic nervous system and calm your body.

You can also:

  • Find 1–2 minute guided meditations on YouTube

  • Use mindfulness apps

  • Just close your eyes and do some intentional breathing

These tiny moments of mindfulness throughout the day are powerful for keeping you grounded and mentally present.

Strategy 3: Enhance Self-Awareness Through Reflection
One of the most powerful tools for protecting your energy is understanding your thoughts and reactions.

I coach principals on what I call the T-Cycle:
Thoughts → Emotions → Actions
When you’re aware of what you’re thinking, you can shift how you feel and choose more intentional actions.

Reflection Questions:

  • What thought led to that emotional reaction?

  • Was I triggered by something unrelated to the current situation?

  • Am I bringing emotions from one situation into the next?

This is especially important when you’re managing discipline or high-stakes conversations. If you’re not self-aware, you may react emotionally or impulsively instead of responding intentionally.

Know your personal triggers. If something repeatedly sets you off, name it. Then create a plan to handle it calmly the next time it comes up.

🔁 Quick Recap:

  • Strategy 1: Implement Regular Breaks

  • Strategy 2: Practice Mindfulness and Meditation

  • Strategy 3: Enhance Self-Awareness Through Reflection

Used together, these strategies help you stay centered, effective, and energized throughout the day.
