A Fresh Start
Welcome back to the podcast! Today we’re talking about a back-to-school mindset reset—how to start strong with confidence and clarity.
Everyone feels nervous about the beginning of a school year—even seasoned principals and teachers. There are always unknowns:
-
New students entering the building.
-
Staff changes or shortages.
-
Or even starting fresh in a brand-new school, like I am this year.
The beginning of the year can feel nerve-wracking, and that’s normal. Even experienced educators get the back-to-school butterflies because they care deeply about doing their job well—for teachers, for students, and for parents.
The Built-In Reset
One of my favorite things about education is the natural cycle of renewal. Every school year feels like a fresh start. Not every profession has this opportunity, so as educators, we should embrace it.
Each school year is a chance to be a new version of yourself—to reflect, reset, and decide who you want to be as a leader.
Reflection Exercise
As we go through today’s episode, I want you to reflect. If you’re driving or walking, think through these questions in your mind. If you’re at home with a journal, pause and write your reflections down.
Reflect on the past school year through the lens of your:
-
Values
-
Thoughts
-
Emotions
-
Actions
Remember: your thoughts create your emotions, which drive your actions.
Reflecting on Leadership
Ask yourself:
-
What did I do well last year?
-
Where do I want to improve?
-
What emotions did I experience most often?
-
Frustration, anxiety, overwhelm?
-
Or calmness, confidence, and control?
-
How did I respond in emotionally charged situations?
-
Where did I take bold action?
-
Were my actions aligned with my values?
Thoughts That Shape Leadership
Think about the thoughts you carried last year:
-
Positive thoughts: “I can figure this out,” or “My team wants to succeed too.”
-
Negative thoughts: “I can’t do this,” or “I have to handle everything myself.”
Positive thoughts fuel confidence. Negative thoughts create stress and overwhelm. Which ones do you need to release? Which ones do you want to carry forward?
Who Do You Want to Be?
Instead of only setting goals, focus on who you want to be as a leader.
Confidence and clarity grow from this foundation.
Confidence: A Choice, Not a Trait
Confidence isn’t something you’re born with—it’s built by consistently doing hard things.
Confidence is an emotion. It’s created by your thoughts. Thoughts like:
These thoughts create confident emotions, which lead to confident actions.
Remember: confidence is always a choice.
Clarity: Deciding Ahead of Time
Clarity means being proactive and clear on what matters most. Ask yourself:
-
What will be my top priorities this year?
-
How do I want to show up every day?
-
What boundaries do I need to set?
Clarity is simply choosing your focus ahead of time—and sharing it clearly with your staff.
A Quick Reset Exercise
Before you start the year, do this:
-
Write down three things you’re proud of from last year.
-
Write down one belief about yourself as a leader that you want to practice this year.
For example:
Repeating these beliefs helps shape your thoughts, emotions, and actions.
Recap
-
It’s normal to feel nervous at the start of a school year.
-
Every year is a reset—you can choose to show up differently.
-
Confidence is chosen and built, not a trait.
-
Clarity comes from deciding what matters most and leading with intention.
