Welcome to The Principal’s Handbook

Hi everyone! I’m Barb Flowers, a certified life coach and former elementary principal with eight years of leadership experience.
Each week, we explore strategies for building mental resilience, managing time effectively, and prioritizing wellness so you can thrive as a school leader.
This is a space where your well-being is the top priority.

Episode 1: Building Confidence as a Principal

Today, we’re talking about one of the most important foundations of leadership: confidence.

But first, let’s talk about my own journey.
When I started as an assistant principal, I had no idea what I was doing day to day. I worked in a building that didn’t have an assistant principal before, so there wasn’t much of a blueprint for me. I simply followed my principal’s direction and hoped I was doing the right thing.

When I later stepped into the principal role, I was overbooked, overwhelmed, and struggling to prioritize.
Even though I wouldn’t have described myself as a negative person, I had a lot of negative self-talk. I constantly second-guessed my decisions and was really hard on myself.

Fast forward to today: I’ve done a lot of work on myself to grow both personally and professionally—and the difference in my confidence has been life-changing.

Investing in coaching and personal development was a huge part of that journey.

  • Early on, I had a fantastic principal coach who helped me reflect on my leadership experiences.

  • I participated in a mastermind group and worked with Heart to Heart Leadership in Ohio, focusing on personal growth across all professions.

  • I continue working with a life coach to this day.

Personal development has had a bigger impact on my leadership than any professional development ever could.
And that’s why this podcast exists—to help you grow in ways that go beyond leadership strategies.

Why Confidence Matters

Confidence is the belief in your ability to do something.
Belief shapes everything:

  • If you believe you can, you will.

  • If you believe you can’t, you won’t.

Here are some favorite quotes on belief:

  • “Your success is directly proportional to your belief in yourself.” —Unknown

  • “Believe in yourself, and there will come a day when others will have no choice but to believe with you.” —Cynthia Kersey

  • “Believe you can, and you’re halfway there.” —Theodore Roosevelt

  • “Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will.” —Suzy Kassem

As principals, we encourage belief in our students and staff. It’s just as crucial to foster that belief within ourselves.

Reflect: How Confident Are You?

Ask yourself:

  • Do I believe in my leadership abilities?

  • Am I confident making quick decisions?

  • Do I focus on what’s working, or do I dwell on what’s going wrong?

  • Do I have a clear vision and goals for my building?

Confidence grows with time—but putting in intentional work speeds up that process.
When you are confident, leadership becomes more joyful, fulfilling, and impactful.

5 Daily Confidence Habits

These habits helped transform my mindset—and they can do the same for you.

1. Journaling

Every morning, I journal using these quick prompts:

  • 5 things I’m grateful for

  • One negative thought I’m having

  • A reframed positive thought

  • One affirmation for the day

When I’m feeling stressed, I also do a brain dump—writing out all my thoughts to clear my mind and reflect.

2. Practicing Gratitude

Gratitude shifts your focus to what’s working:

  • I start and end my day listing things I’m grateful for.

  • I use “Five Finger Gratitude”—naming one thing for each finger.

  • With my assistant principal, we end tough days by sharing three good things.

3. Affirmations

Affirmations are encouragement for your future self.
Examples:

  • “I am a principal who focuses on what’s working.”

  • “I am a person who doesn’t get overwhelmed during challenging times.”

Repeating these trains your mind to believe them.

4. Celebrating Small Wins

Small wins lead to big results.

  • Celebrate moments like a teacher applying feedback or a positive student interaction.

  • We even start staff meetings with celebrations!

5. Prioritizing

Prioritization is key to leadership success:

  • I schedule my top priorities—like being visible in classrooms.

  • I set clear routines both personally and professionally.

  • I learned not every “urgent” request is truly important.
