Welcome back to the podcast. Today, we’re going to talk about life coaching and how it helps you unlock your true potential. It’s tough to do this on your own because it’s hard to see your own potential. We often get stuck in our thoughts and self-concept. Our self-concept is shaped over time and dictates how we perceive ourselves and how others see us. Without someone to help you change that perception, it’s hard to break free from it. A coach fights for the new self-concept you want to build.

Unlocking your potential is difficult when you’re trapped in self-limiting beliefs and have a fixed idea of who you are. People often think, “I’m just shy,” or “I’m not a productive person,” and they define themselves by these labels. They make these thoughts their identity, which can be hard to break. But that’s where life coaching becomes so powerful.

So, how does life coaching help? First, it helps you figure out who you are and who you want to be. One activity I love doing with my clients is the “1.0 Self vs. 2.0 Self” exercise. In my membership, there’s a video explaining how to do this, but I start with this exercise because it’s a powerful way to see who you currently are (your 1.0 self) and who you want to become (your 2.0 self).

Sometimes, it’s hard to imagine your 2.0 self because you may not even believe you can be that different. But in coaching, we work through the gap between where you are now and where you want to be. Let me share a few examples of my own 1.0 and 2.0 selves:

  • 1.0 Self: I judged myself constantly. 2.0 Self: I have compassion and give myself grace.

  • 1.0 Self: I overate and snacked a lot, which ruined my progress. 2.0 Self: I eat healthily and stay on track.

  • 1.0 Self: I journaled sporadically. 2.0 Self: I journal consistently.

Understanding the difference between my 1.0 and 2.0 selves helps me regularly check if I’m truly living out the person I want to be.

A coach helps you determine your future goals. Some people don’t even know what they want in life, and a coach can help you figure that out and show you what’s possible. My coach opened my eyes to possibilities I never considered. We grow up learning certain beliefs from our families, and often, these beliefs limit us. For example, I never thought about doing anything outside of education, and I definitely didn’t think about coaching as a career.

Life coaching shows you what’s truly possible based on your goals and aspirations. It helps you expand beyond your limited beliefs.

Coaching also builds confidence. As you work towards becoming the person you want to be, you start believing in yourself more. You realize that you can achieve anything you set your mind to. I used to look at others on social media and think they were just lucky, but I’ve learned that people are the way they are because they decided to be that way. Confidence comes from believing that you can do what you set out to do.

Coaching also teaches you how to prioritize yourself. We’ve all heard the airplane analogy: “Put on your oxygen mask first.” In education, we tend to do everything for everyone else and neglect ourselves. Coaching helps you understand that you need to prioritize your well-being first so that you can serve others better. It also teaches you how to set boundaries, step off the busy bus, and focus on what matters most to you.

For me, growing up, my mom would volunteer me for everything. I learned to say yes without thinking. Now, through coaching, I’ve learned to prioritize the things that align with my goals, whether it’s for my business, my family, or my personal goals. If something doesn’t align, I don’t have to do it.

A coach also helps you manage your thoughts. I never realized the importance of my thoughts until I started coaching. I learned that thoughts create emotions, which drive actions. If you have negative thoughts, you’ll feel negative emotions, and that leads to negative actions. So, it’s crucial to be aware of the thoughts you’re telling yourself. Coaching helps you shift those negative thoughts into positive, empowering ones.

Many times, we make up stories in our heads about what might happen, often in a negative light. A coach helps you see and challenge those limiting thoughts.

Coaching also teaches you how to feel your feelings. Many people use numbing behaviors like shopping, drinking, or binge-watching TV to avoid emotions. I’ve done all of these myself, but life coaching taught me to feel my feelings instead of numbing them. We have to experience both the good and the bad to grow.

Lastly, a coach fights for your dreams. When you set a goal and things get tough, it’s easy to give up. But a coach won’t let you quit. They’ll hold you accountable and help you stay focused on your goals, even when things get difficult.

Having a coach is life-changing. I’m living proof. I left my job as a principal and became a full-time coach. This is my dream job, and it’s all thanks to my own life coach who showed me what was possible.
